About “Angel in The Skyline”
Montclair, NJ (February 2021) – 4 Flavors Art presents “Angel in The Skyline” with work by Holly Suzanne Rader. This exhibition highlights a unique mural being created by Ms. Rader on the 79th floor of WTC Tower 3,
which is a portrait of Audrey Munson, “America’s first supermodel.” Munson, nicknamed “Miss Manhattan,” was a muse and inspiration for more than 12 iconic statues in New York City, at locations such as the Manhattan Municipal Building, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Frick Collection, Manhattan Bridge, the main branch of the New York Public Library, and more. Despite her fame and notoriety at the time, a love triangle and murder scandal, involving a lover rumored to murder his wife to be with Audrey, led her to depression, schizophrenia, and attempted suicide. She was committed to an insane asylum for the remaining 65 years of her life, where she died at the age of 104, buried in an unmarked grave. According to Rader, “this is my tribute to a dark beauty used and lost by tragedy and loneliness. She is now an angel in the skyline. It is about her beautifully sculpted profile and the evil that feeds on innocence represented by the black serpent in her hair.”
The 4 Flavors Art exhibition shares the story behind “Miss Manhattan,” while displaying new work by the artist, known for large mixed media collage paintings in her signature “graffiti glam” aesthetic. Rader fuses vintage portraiture of film and culture icons with striking neon swaths of paint, adorning her pieces with rich appliqué, including glitter, sequins, spikes, and found objects. Often including slogans and text, her work elevates these timeless subjects into modernity with a poignant feminist edge.
Specially scheduled private viewings of “Miss Manhattan,” on the 79th floor of WTC Tower 3, will be coordinated upon request throughout the run of the exhibition.
